Innovative FTIR Analysis

About Us

Infrared Interpretations was founded by Frank Higgins to address the growing need of infrared interpretation to address increasingly complex industrial problems and cost saving initiatives that exist in today's marketplace.  Trained infrared experts are becoming extinct, as industries seek chemists with broader scopes of techniques such as HPLC, SEM, GC, mass spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR).  Since FTIR is just another technique to be familiar, expertise is seldom reached by chemists.  FTIR is unique in that the molecular structure of some samples can't be well characterized by any other technique.  Mass spectroscopy typically requires samples to be in solution and of low to mid molecular weights and NMR needs a sample to be in complete solution.  The goal of Infrared Interpretations is to bridge the steep learning curve for infrared interpretation and inform scientists that are unaware of the potential for this technique.

As an analytical research chemist at a specialty chemical company (8 years), Frank received personal training from the now late Norman B. Colthup, author of the "Colthup Chart" of infrared group frequencies and many other publications.  Carrying on Norm Colthup's passion for infrared spectroscopy, Frank researched a very broad range of projects and product chemistries, at the specialty chemical company, before moving on to become a Senior Applications Development Scientist for a global electronic and bio-analytical measurement instrument company (7 years).  In this current applications development role, Frank has developed an extensive amount of analytical methods for polymer, oil / fuel analysis, soil & mineral, and carbon fiber composite applications.
